Coalition Against Female Foeticide (CAFF)

Inter-school Competitions on 03 October 2009
One of most cruel versions of violence against women is female foeticide prevalent in India. It is violence on a living human segment of society that is voiceless by virtue of being unborn and unwanted by virtue of sex alone.
All means of modern science and technology (ultrasound scanning, amniocentesis, and in vitro fertilization) seem to be used not so much to want the girl child as much it is in order to eliminate her. As a result, the sex ratio in our country is tilting in favour of the male child.
The implementation of the Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act of 2002 has been dismal given the well-entrenched cultural endorsement that the evil of female foeticide seems to enjoy.
UNWANTED – that seems to be her best description among even educated and well-off sections of our society. Yet, there are ‘most wanted’ products and movies. Even deadly criminals seem to be ‘most wanted’ or at least ‘wanted’ but not the female child.
The Coalition Against Female Foeticide (CAFF) therefore found UNWANTED as an apt name for its event to generate awareness on this sensitive issue. The Coalition Against Female Foeticide (CAFF) is a Chennai-based network consisting of prolife forums, women organizations and civil society groups that is dedicated to the awareness on female foeticide in the city.
